Dealer history – submitted information: Arthur Kauffmann

Thank you to Michael Kauffmann, who send us a little booklet on the history of his father Arthur Kauffmann, the well-known art dealer trading in Grafton Street in London (1939-77) and later in Knightsbridge. Image

Arthur famously sold the Master of Flemalle’s ‘Entombment of Christ’ to the collector Count Seilern – it’s now at the Courtauld Gallery in London. Arthur sounded like a real character – as Michael says, ‘he was still bidding at the sale of the Robert von Hirsch collection at Sotheby’s in 1978 when he was 91 years old.’

Thanks Michael for sending this information.

  1. Dear Mark
I’m highly interessted in the booklet about Arthur Kauffmann you mentioned above. It is very hard to find. Could you tell me if there is any mentioning of silver objects? I would be very thankfull.

    • Hi Martin,
I’ve had a look through the little booklet, and there’s no mention of any silver at all…but it is a brief outline history of Kauffmann, so perhaps one would not expect to see such detail?…if you send me your address I’ll send you a photocopy if that would help?…email me direct at the university. m.w.westgarth@leeds.ac.uk
